College anyone…Anyone?

Importance of college

The question is:
In today’s economic and social dynamic, is a college education as important as it once was?

Despite what many might think, college is well known across hundreds of nations all over the world and has been around for several centuries and has a very important meaning in the lives of many. It would be safe to assume that higher education is going to be around for a long time and have an enormous impact on the lives of many people. Going to college has a large role in American Culture. It is almost a right of passage. Generally a person who displays their dislike for college may be considered an outcast.

Why would one not go to college? Everyone goes to college. Or do they?

Here is my story:
“While all of my friends in high school were busy filling out applications for college and cramming for the SATs, I studied for my regular classes and maintained employment. When the time came, I graduated, a semester early and took the infamous “year before college” break. I never saw the workload of the full time college student. I did attend a class here and there, I even tried my hand at Cosmetology school. Nothing ever seemed to stick.

After a few years of working hard and playing even harder, I settled down with my husband and we started our family. It was not long after that he experienced a Pneumothorax, or collapsed lung. They say it happens to young, thin, athletic men, just a spontaneous collapse. It comes with no warning, no symptoms that anything was wrong, he just woke up one morning with half his respiratory function. We were lucky, we got him to the ER and he survived but I decided right then and there, we needed to make some different decisions.

I headed back to school. This time on my own dime and my own time. I determined that an online degree was right for me. I could work, study, and be the wife and mother I needed to be. It was a lot of hard work but 4 years later, I have my degree and if anything were to happen to my husband, I can now get a job that would take care of our family the way he always has.”

In the end, it was a matter of economics that drove me back into the educational system. It is not common practice to associate economics with college. Generally, college would be thought to have no effect on our economic situation, but there are in fact some effects. The sales industry associated with college is actually a 2.3 billion dollar a year industry and growing each year. The industry employs nearly 150,000 people in the United States alone. It would be safe to say that college plays an important role in American economics and shouldn't be taken for granted. Not only has higher education created its own industry, it has provided the intellectuals needed to work in a variety of other industries.

If one finds themselves on the precipice of college; it is not a necessary evil, but it may just be the advantage needed to win out over another applicant. In this job market you need all the leverage possible, and having a college degree can push you over that employment edge.
